Scott DEVEREAUX, a son of the Republic of TEXAS
The Sons of the Republic of Texas, Inc. (“SRT”) consists of members who are direct lineal descendants of those that settled the Republic of Texas prior to February 19, 1846, when Texas merged with the United States as the 28th State. The SRT traces its origins back to April, 1893, and the Texas Veterans Association, which was comprised of members that actually lived in the Republic of Texas. It was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1934.
My 4th Great-Grandfather, Scott DEVEREAUX was a Slave owned by Julien Sydney DEVEREUX. He was taken, along with a family of Slaves from Adaline Rebecca BRADLEY in Loango, Covington County, ALABAMA.
They were forced to walk from Alabama, arriving in The Republic of TEXAS in 1841. Scott’s son, my 3rd Great-Grandfather Daniel DEVEREAUX had 10 children before he died enslaved on 19 Nov 1855 on the Monte Verdi Plantation, owned by Julien Sydney DEVEREUX, and Sarah DEVEREUX GARRISON LANDRUM, in Rusk County, Texas.
Daniel’s son, my 2nd Great-Grandfather Aaron DEVEREAUX FREENEY was born enslaved in 1845 in Lake Creek, Delta, The Republic of Texas. He and his 9 siblings were adopted by their Uncle, Martin FREENY after Daniel’s death.
I’ve confirmed DNA matches to the Slaves of the Monte Verdi Plantation in Rusk County, TEXAS. These men are my direct Paternal Haplogroup E-Z6018 lineage.
Their story has been published in books, and they’ve been historically recognized in TEXAS for the humanitarian contributions to the State, and I believe them and their descendants to be Sons of the Republic of Texas.
Their Papers are archive at the University of Texas, and is one of the most complete Antebellum Collection in TEXAS.
