Martin Luther KING Jr. was born Michael KING Jr. on 15 Jan 15. From the time that Martin was born, he grew up with Segregation in America, when Black people and White people were separate and had different rights.
If a Black family wanted to eat at a restaurant, they could not eat with White people in the restaurant. They had to sit in the back of the movie theater, and even use restroom for only Black people. He did not understand the laws that kept black people and white people apart. These were called Jim Crow laws.
Young Martin grew up to be an African American Baptist minister and activist. In 1955, Martin Luther KING Jr. began advancing civil rights for Black people socio-economic struggles and disparities in the United States using nonviolence and civil disobedience.
He become one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement resisting against Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination against Black people in America.
His “I Have a Dream” Speech
Martin Luther KING Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on 28 Aug 28, 1963. In the speech, He called for civil and economic rights and shared his dream of equality once racism is ended in the United States.
Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was a defining moment of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in American history.
Martin Luther KING Jr. was assassinated on 4 April 1968.
