Did John William DEVEREUX know LOFTUS or LOFTIS?
From John William DEVEREUX‘s Diary:
” … Dan went yesterday after a Doctor for Lylly’s family-rode one of our mules-when Lylly had a blooded mare idle & his father-in-law (Loftus) had 4 Negroe men. We really are imposed upon-Lylly has gone to Montgomery & we couldn’t resist Negroe girl here this morning after-brandy-and Kich after Castor Oil and Spc ov of Turpentine.”I have no idea what he is describing, especially in regards to “we couldn’t resist Negroe girl here this morning after-brandy“, but the mention of Lylly’s Father-in-Law, LOFTUS is the surname LOFTIS. The time period is 1830, approximately 15 years before Julien Sydney DEVEREUX stole slaves and ran away to Texas.
Slave surnames are not a coincidence, and neither are the slaves he takes. Little bits like this are available to the public in the Julien Sydney DEVEREUX Papers at the University of Texas, Briscoe Center. btw.
