Africana Studies
The Africana Studies program at the University of Auburn College of Liberal Arts offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of the history, literature, culture, and lived experiences of Black individuals in Africa and the African diaspora. Embracing a global perspective, the program examines diverse expressions of blackness across diasporic communities in regions such as the Americas, Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe. Through its curriculum, Africana Studies aims to provide students with a nuanced understanding of domestic and transnational black experiences, covering topics including aesthetics, history, culture, and politics. The program combines teaching, research, and outreach to foster students' knowledge and engagement with the social, cultural, aesthetic, political, and economic realities of people of African descent. The program's objectives include offering a minor in Africana Studies, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, providing mentoring opportunities, fostering collaboration and networking, promoting study and internships abroad in sub-Saharan Africa, showcasing students' achievements, and offering a media resources center for Africana students, faculty, and the wider university community.
