Narrative

"Black Sheeped"

Alfred Devereaux, the son of Charles Hughes Devereux and nephew of John William Devereux, is suspeced to be the Father of a slave owned by John William and Julien Sidney DEVERUX, Amey Devereaux. A DNA match between George Edward FREENEY Jr. and Richard DEVEREAUX on 23andMey suggests that Richard may be a descendant of Alfred DEVEREAUX and the biological father of Amey, rather than Henry.

Julien Devereux, accompanied by several groups of slaves under the guidance of Baker Bond and Alfred Devereux, migrated to Texas and settled in Jasper. In 1841, Julien became a citizen of the Republic and established residency in Jasper County. He solidified his Texan identity by formally pledging allegiance, including the slaves owned by his father as part of his household.

John Devereux, an elderly man at the time, was displeased with his son Julien's choices, which had led to their financial ruin. However, despite his reservations, John decided to join Julien in Texas in the spring of 1842.

The first trip to Texas involved Julien, Barbara Way's daughter, Antoinette, and a group of enslaved individuals under the direction of William Baker Bond. Simultaneously, a second trip led by Alfred Devereux took place in the early fall of 1841. Alfred, one of John's nephews, was responsible for a group of enslaved people, including some owned by John and a few owned by Julien. The expenses incurred during these trips resulted in a lawsuit between Julien, John, and Alfred five years later, in 1846.

John Devereux recorded Alfred's departure from Hobson's Choice in Macon County, Alabama, on September 30, 1841. Alfred embarked on the journey with a large wagon drawn by six fine mules, carrying supplies and possessions. Additionally, there was a light wagon pulled by two mules, and the Devereux family's one-horse carriage was part of their travel equipment.

The specific individuals who accompanied Alfred on the journey can be found in the lawsuit recorded in the District Court Book of the County of Montgomery, Texas. It appears that some of the enslaved individuals sent to Texas by Julien were not rightfully owned by him, as the Bradley family later claimed that he had stolen some of their slaves. In 1848, Adaline, Julien's former wife, learned about the lawsuit over John's will and inheritance and sought to recover her losses through legal action.

Although the majority of the slaves were owned by John William Devereux and considered part of the family's property, Julien had only a small ownership stake in the slaves he managed. These slaves primarily cultivated cotton for the benefit of Julien and his father. Julien's decision to move to Texas was influenced by the fact that selling the slaves would not have generated enough money to cover his significant debts.

Narrative

On Early Texas Families, it is mentioned that Albert M. DEVEREAUX married Verenoy Span in Henry County, Alabama, and that she was born in 1810 in Georgia. They had at least one child, a son named Charles M. Devereaux, who was born in 1835 in Alabama.

In the 1850 US Census Slave list of the Devereux Slaves, there is a mention of a mulatto girl who is approximately 6 years old. It is presumed that this child is Amey Devereaux, and there is a belief that her father is Alfred Devereaux, not Henry.

The 1850 Census confirms the presence of a 6-year-old female mulatto child. This corresponds with Amey's estimated birth year of 1844, which closely aligns with the information found in the Devereux papers.
