Narrative
At the time of Sally Devereux Thweatt-Grigg's death in 1809, slavery was a well-established institution in Georgia. Initially, Georgia attempted to prohibit Black slavery between 1735 and 1750, but it eventually became a significant part of the state's economy and society. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgia actively participated in the transatlantic slave trade, with Savannah serving as a major port for the trafficking of African people.
Enslaved individuals in Georgia labored on plantations and in urban areas such as Savannah, where they were regularly bought and sold at public auctions. The institution of slavery persisted in Georgia until the end of the Civil War in 1865, when Union General William T. Sherman occupied Savannah and issued Special Field Order No. 15, which guaranteed land and freedom to formerly enslaved people.
Sally Devereux Thweatt-Grigg and her daughter Antoinette both passed away on November 1, 1809, in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. However, there is no specific information available regarding whether her husband inherited any of their slaves after their deaths.
During the era of slavery in the United States, enslaved individuals were considered property and could be inherited, bought, or sold by their owners. When an owner died, enslaved families could be divided among the owner's heirs as part of the inheritance or sold to settle the estate. In some cases, enslaved people were bequeathed to family members through wills.
