Devereaux _____, Henry 1a 2a 3a
Birth Name | Devereaux _____, Henry |
Gender | male |
Age at Death | about 44 years, 1 month, 9 days |
Narrative
In 1845, Julien Sidney DEVEREUX Sr. stated to his father John William DEVEREUX in a letter, "Henry rather claims Sunday to attend to his own affairs."
Henry's ability to exert and command a respect for himself in a time that doing so was not only impossible but could have substantial consequences if interpreted as insubordinate could only be accomplished if he was biologically connected to his enslavers by blood. Henry was enslaved by his uncle and cousin and "Claiming Sunday" as his day to be free. DNA research is awaiting confirmation of a DNA Connection to Charles Hughes DEVEREAUX II and George Edward FREENEY Jr.
Henry did not take the DEVEREAUX surname after he was freed from slavery in 1867. He had four sons and three daughters with Maria between 1825 and 1846. In a show of respect for their father, His children took his first name as their surname. Although genetically DEVEREAUX, they are known by HENRY today.

23andMe reports a DNA Match between George Edward FREENEY Jr. and Richard DEVEREAUX. As of 17 Jun 2023, there is a pending confirmation of the DNA match between the two to establish their relationship to Charles Hughes DEVEREAUX II, who is the father of Alfred M. DEVEREAUX and the brother of John William DEVEREUX.
In the 1850 Census Slave Schedules, it is recorded that Julien Sidney Devereaux owned four Mulatto slaves. Among them is a male slave, aged 42, whose birth year corresponds to that of Charles, Tabby's Mulatto son, who was born in 1808 in Wrightsboro, Columbia County, Georgia.
Based on this information, it is reasonable to assume that Charles Hughes Devereaux II is the father of the aforementioned 42-year-old Mulatto man, referred to as Charles DEVEREAUX III.
The purpose of this comparison is to identify the specific chromosomes and segments associated with the confirmed European ancestor of the DEVEREAUX family. Simultaneously, it aims to emphasize the unique genetics specific to a unique branch of the already complex African American FREENEY, DEVEREAX, and HENRY lineages that descend from slaves, Scott and Tabby DEVEREAUX.
Detailed segment data
George Edward FREENEY Jr. | Richard DEVEREAUX
Chromosome: 4
Common Relative Clusters: 2DNA Relatives each have in common can be found on Cromosome 4. Richard DEVEREAUX's DNA Matches starting position range from 3499153 through an ending position of 18716492 overlapping segment. A second group in the same common DNA Relatives appears on Chromosome 4, but they all have a Start Position of 1.
If suspect is correct, and Genealogy records and reporting through this project is correct, his marker would appear in Amey DEVEREUX.

Devereux worked his slave crews every weekday and usually half day on Saturday. Sunday was a day of rest for all. Well, sort of. Many chores were performed on Sundays, but they did not usually involve held work for the master. Slaves worked their own fields on Sunday. The title of this book came from one such instance. Henry postponed leaving for Rusk County with Julien's letter to his father, John, until Monday morning because Henry "claims Sunday" to attend to his own affairs.
